Born in Glasgow in 1932, Law's journey into the world of performing arts began at the prestigious Bristol Old Vic Theatre school. Initially intending to become a stage designer, she eventually switched to acting and went on to appear in numerous productions in the 1950s.

Law's early forays into television in the late 1950s were followed by a string of appearances in popular shows such as Dr Finlay's Casebook, Dixon of Dock Green, and The Troubleshooters throughout the 1960s. By the end of the 1970s, she had established herself as a talented stage actress, taking on significant roles in productions like A Day in the Death of Joe Egg and A Voyage Round My Father.

Her association with the National Theatre marked a significant milestone in her career, with appearances in notable productions such as For Services Rendered and When We Are Married in 1979. Law's work in film gained prominence in the late 1980s, with notable roles in Peter's Friends and Much Ado About Nothing, both of which featured her alongside her daughter Emma.

In the years that followed, Law continued to appear in high-profile TV shows, including Waking the Dead, Rosemary & Thyme, and Foyle's War. Her final screen role was in the 2020 romance Then Came You, written by and starring Kathie Lee Gifford.

Law is survived by her children, Emma and Sophie Thompson, who have both followed in their mother's footsteps in the world of acting.
