NASA launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on August 30 at 7:26 a.m. Eastern time. The 18,000-pound observatory, roughly the size of a tour bus, lifted off from Florida's Kennedy Space Center atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.

Dominic Benford, the Roman Space Telescope program scientist at NASA headquarters, expressed awe after the launch. "In some ways, I could never believe that this moment would actually happen, and it is here and far more beautiful than I could have anticipated," he said during a livestream. The telescope is named for Nancy Grace Roman, NASA's first chief of astronomy and a key advocate for space-based telescopes who died in 2018.

A Mission to Challenge Cosmic Models

The telescope's primary five-year mission is to complete three major surveys. Its data could challenge the standard model of cosmology. Julie McEnery, a senior project scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, said there are hints the model is flawed. "We're very likely to demonstrate that our standard model is wrong, and to set ourselves on a path to figuring out how does our universe really work," she stated.

The main survey will use a powerful 300-megapixel infrared camera called the Wide Field Instrument. It will map one-eighth of the entire sky over about 17 months, capturing data on more than one billion galaxies. This instrument has the same sharpness as Hubble but a field of view at least 100 times larger. McEnery noted that one month of Roman observations surveying the Milky Way would take about a century with Hubble.

Three Surveys and a Powerful Test

The telescope's three core surveys are designed to probe different cosmic questions. The data will measure the universe's expansion and investigate dark matter and dark energy.

Roman will also test a new coronagraph designed to be 100 to 1,000 times more powerful than any previous space-based version. This instrument blocks starlight to reveal faint orbiting planets. Its success is considered key for NASA's future Habitable Worlds Observatory, which will search for signs of life.

A Complementary and Public Future

The telescope was built to be complementary to the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile, which began its survey in June. McEnery described them as "siblings embarking on a life of exploration." Roman's development and operations have a total budget of about $4.3 billion, with costs currently running a few million dollars under expectations, according to Benford.

After a journey of more than three months to a point one million miles from Earth, the telescope will begin operations. The first images are expected in December. "It could be around Christmas, so hopefully that's a nice present," Benford told NBC News. Once surveying begins, it will beam about one terabyte of data to Earth daily. Jeremy Perkins, an integration and test scientist at NASA Goddard, compared this to "streaming a million songs from a million miles from Earth."

All observations will be made public immediately. Jackie Townsend, the project manager at NASA Goddard, expressed hope that the data would inspire future scientists. "The next Dr. Nancy Grace Roman, sitting in a classroom somewhere next year, will be studying our data," she said.
