Artists Decline Documenta 16 Over Germany's Gaza Stance

Several artists have declined invitations to participate in Documenta 16 due to Germany's stance on Israel's war in Gaza. The exhibition's curator, Naomi Beckwith, revealed the refusals in an interview with the German publication Die Zeit.
Beckwith, who is the deputy director and chief curator of the Guggenheim Museum, stated that some artists feel they are not free in Germany to show what they want. Others, she said, specifically criticize the country's political position on the conflict. She did not name the artists who declined.
The Shadow of Documenta 15
The upcoming edition of the quinquennial Kassel exhibition is still being shaped under the long shadow of its predecessor. Documenta 15 in 2022 was engulfed in controversy over accusations of antisemitism, which many argued was an attempt to crack down on pro-Palestine art. The fallout led to the entire curatorial selection committee for Documenta 16 resigning in 2023.
Beckwith was appointed as the sole organizer in 2024. She directly addressed one of the most contentious works from 2022: a large mural by the Indonesian collective Taring Padi that featured an antisemitic caricature of a Mossad agent. The work was first covered, then removed entirely.
"I'm sure something like that won't happen again. We've learned a lot since then," Beckwith told Die Zeit. She stated that Taring Padi did not understand the importance of protecting Germany's Jewish community. She also suggested the curators of that edition, the collective ruangrupa, may not have been prepared for the fallout.
New Rules and Unanswered Questions
In response to the scandal, Documenta's management adopted a new code of conduct. It includes a definition of antisemitism from the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). This definition is controversial because it considers certain criticisms of Israel to be a form of prejudice.
Die Zeit noted that Beckwith herself never signed this code of conduct. "I wasn't asked to do it," she responded. This detail highlights ongoing tensions between the institution's new governance rules and the curator's independent role.
Seeking a Path Forward
When asked for her own stance on the Gaza war, Beckwith deflected from giving a personal position. Far more important than my personal stance is the question of how we can overcome this divisive way of thinking, she said. She expressed a desire to restart conversations, understanding the need for solidarity but warning against entrenched positions.
The theme for Documenta 16, scheduled for 2027, remains unrevealed. Beckwith's extensive interview focused largely on handling the profound political and cultural divisions that now define the exhibition's context. Her task is to rebuild an artistic platform whose global prestige has been severely damaged by allegations of censorship and antisemitism. The artist refusals she confirmed are an early, concrete sign of those enduring challenges.
