Dolly Parton was laid to rest in a private ceremony in Nashville on Friday. The country music icon, who died at age 80 on August 25 after what her family described as a brief battle with cancer, was interred at Woodlawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum next to her husband, Carl Thomas Dean, to whom she was married for 60 years. The family has confirmed the details of the service, which was a small, private affair attended only by immediate family.

Only immediate family attended the small service, according to a report from People magazine. Parton had pre-arranged details at the mausoleum, including having her name engraved on the plaque alongside an image of the Tennessee cabin where she grew up.

Family tributes and public remembrance

Parton's great-niece, Lainey Parton, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram the day after the funeral. She wrote that her granny always made her feel valued and supported her dreams unconditionally. She also noted that because Parton could not have children of her own, she made her nieces and nephews feel as if they were hers.

Public tributes began the following night. Parton's niece, singer Jada Star, performed at a tribute concert on the stage of Nashville's Grand Ole Opry. Ahead of her performance, Star posted on Instagram about moving through a fog of sadness. She performed a song called The Orchard, which she had recorded with Parton for her 2024 album Smoky Mountain DNA: Family, Faith and Fables.

Continuing legacy and posthumous projects

Parton's manager, Danny Nozell, emphasized that a traditional public memorial was not what the singer wanted. In a press release, he said the team plans to take a beat and then proceed with a festival concept that Parton herself had envisioned. This event, named DollyFest, is scheduled for two weekends in Nashville and London next year. Planning had initially begun for January 2026 before Parton stepped back due to health issues.

Nozell confirmed that Parton worked diligently until her death and that her team is committed to realizing her unfinished projects.

Upcoming releases and charitable request

A series of commercial and cultural projects Parton was developing are still moving forward. Her estate announced that a Broadway musical is set to launch in New York later this year. Additionally, several Nashville-based ventures are imminent.

The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Imagination Library. This is the organization Parton founded to promote childhood literacy and a love of reading.
