Lena Dunham will reprise her role as Hannah Horvath in a five-episode limited run of Girls for HBO in 2027. Original cast members Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, and Andrew Rannells are all set to return, with Judd Apatow back as executive producer.

This marks a full decade since the seminal HBO series about millennial strivers concluded its six-season run. Production on the revival is scheduled to begin next year.

Creative motivations and context

The revival follows Lena Dunham's fortieth birthday and the launch of her bestselling memoir, Famesick. Dunham stated that the characters only became clear to her again recently. "We always said we would only return to Girls if there was a specific story we were burning to tell," she said.

She described the characters starting to talk to her again around her milestone birthday. Dunham added that the opportunity to revisit the project with hindsight and gratitude is rare. Amy Gravitt, head of HBO comedy programming, said the network is thrilled to see Dunham turn her gaze from the tumult of one’s twenties to the milestone of turning forty.

Industry and cultural backdrop

The announcement arrives as HBO becomes part of Skydance following a merger valued at $111 billion. The revival taps into renewed cultural interest in millennial-era storytelling. The original series, which ran from 2012 to 2017, was a career launchpad for its cast and received 19 Emmy nominations, winning two awards.

The BBC ranked Girls number 30 on its list of the 100 Greatest TV Shows of the 21st Century. Since the series ended, Dunham's credits have included the Netflix series Too Much and the indie film Sharp Stick.

Unanswered questions and next steps

While the core cast and format are confirmed, several key details remain unannounced. The title of the limited run, its plot, and any additional casting have yet to be revealed. Adam Driver, a major star from the original series, is not mentioned among the returning actors.

On a mock promotional call, Dunham humorously questioned if they could still call the show Girls, joking, "because we're old as." HBO Max has announced the new episodes are in the works. Production is set to begin in 2027.
