Texas Democrats sweep 2024 election, ending 30-year GOP rule
Democrats won every statewide office in Texas for the first time since 1994, flipping the U.S. Senate, governor's mansion, and other key positions in a historic political realignment.

Democrats won every statewide race in Texas on Tuesday, ending a 30-year Republican streak. The sweep included victories for the U.S. Senate, governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, comptroller, railroad commissioner, and agriculture commissioner. The results delivered a decisive rebuke to the GOP and former President Donald Trump, who had carried Texas by double digits just four years earlier. National Republicans were alarmed, as Texas's 40 electoral votes are critical for winning the White House.
Voter frustration over high prices, the Iran war, and unpopular Republican leadership fueled the change. Political analyst Forrest Wilder observed the mood. "It seems like Texans went into the voting booth with a vengeance, voting against anyone with an R next to their names," he said. The Democratic Party's own favorability ratings were low, indicating the result was more an anti-Republican wave than a pro-Democratic mandate. Texas remains a fundamentally conservative state.
Nationwide blue wave impact
The victory was powered by national political trends and poor Republican candidates. Ken Paxton, widely disliked even within his own party, was a significant liability. The results marked a stark repudiation of President Trump. Analysts described a perfect storm for the GOP. Mike Madrid called the losses a 'perfect storm of disaster,' while Brandon Rottinghaus said 'everything' went wrong due to national trends and unpopular policies. Cal Jillson attributed the Republican collapse to 'lazy arrogance' and a sense of entitlement after decades in power.
Local victories and key races
Democrats secured historic wins in critical down-ballot contests. The party flipped every seat on the Texas Supreme Court, the Court of Criminal Appeals, and the 15th Court of Appeals. They also won seven of the fifteen seats on the State Board of Education. Key individual races broke long-standing Republican holds.
James Talarico, age 37, became the first Democrat Texas sent to the U.S. Senate since Lloyd Bentsen was reelected in 1988. Gina Hinojosa made history as the state's first Latina governor.
Suburban and regional shifts
Democratic gains were cemented by flipping critical suburban counties. They won Collin County, which is Ken Paxton's home county, and Brazos County, home to Texas A&M University, for the first time in decades. In Denton County, Talarico secured 53 percent of the vote with 95 percent counted, while Hinojosa won the governor's race there by a narrow margin.
The wins extended to congressional seats. Democrats held previously gerrymandered South Texas seats and won seats in the Rio Grande Valley, including one by a Tejano musician. Despite Republicans redrawing House districts to gain five additional seats, Democrats made no gains from that effort. Record midterm turnout in places like Dallas County, which first turned blue in 2006, underscored the energy.
Campaigns focused on making regular people feel heard, highlighting Texas history and values. Voter anger over high gas prices, inflation, data centers, and ICE raids in South Texas was palpable. The effort was described as a Sisyphean struggle, recalling the last coordinated campaign by the Texas Democratic Party in 1982. Elon Musk spent tens of millions of dollars on anti-Talarico advertising, but it failed to stem the tide.
For activists, the victory was surreal. Alejandro 'AJ' Perez Jr., president of the University of North Texas College Democrats, said he never wanted to get his hopes up too much. Aaron Jolly of the Collin County Young Democrats expressed similar disbelief. Analysts caution it is too soon to confirm a lasting political realignment, but Democrats have achieved their long-term goal of making Texas competitive. For one author raised in Denton County, Texas has been a one-party state his entire life. The 2024 results mark a potential turning point.
